āItās not that weāre fighting for special rights just for us. Weāre fighting for the same rights.ā ā Jim Obergefell
Nine years ago today, the landmark Supreme Court ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges recognized a simple truth: love is love.Ā
This decision ruled that all states must license marriages to same-sex couples and recognize marriages lawfully performed out of state. Obergefell v. Hodges guaranteed marriage equality in a monumental ruling for the LGBTQIA+ community. š³ļøāš
Idaho has, today--01/01/2025--asked the US Supreme Court to revoke Obergefell v. Hodges, and strike down the legality of gay marriage.
Christopher Wiggins at The Advocate:
IdahoĀ RepublicanĀ legislators have introduced a resolution on Tuesday urging theĀ U.S. Supreme CourtĀ to overturnĀ Obergefell v. Hodges, the 2015 decision that establishedĀ marriage equalityĀ nationwide. The measure, House Joint Memorial 1,Ā claimsĀ the Supreme Court overstepped its authority by requiring states to recognize same-sex marriages. It also calls for a return to the so-called ānatural definitionā of marriage as between one man and one woman, a concept supporters insist is rooted in tradition. The non-binding resolution, spearheaded by the State Affairs Committee, asserts that states and not federal courts should decide marriage laws. While the resolution carries no legal weight, its introduction sends a clear signal about the state GOPās priorities. āThe Idaho Legislature insists on restoring the issue of marriage and enforcement of all laws pertaining to marriage back to the several states and the people,ā the resolution reads.
The move comes even as a majority of Americansāincluding majorities ofĀ DemocratsĀ and independents and nearly half of Republicansāsupport marriage equality. A 2024 Gallup surveyĀ found that 69 percent of Americans favor the legality of same-sex marriages, a figure that has remained consistently high since theĀ ObergefellĀ ruling.
[...] Idahoās resolution echoes a growing movement among conservative lawmakers to challenge LGBTQ+ rights at the state level. Across the country, Republican-led legislatures have introduced bills targeting everything fromĀ transgenderĀ health care to drag performances. The resolution also aligns with JusticeĀ Clarence ThomasāsĀ recent remarks in his concurring opinion in theĀ DobbsĀ case that overturnedĀ Roe v. Wade, which in 2022 called for reconsidering cases likeĀ ObergefellĀ as part of a broader critique of substantive due processāthe legal principle underpinning marriage equality and other rights, such as access to contraception.
Idaho House Republicans file out-of-touch resolution HJM1 to urge the SCOTUS to repeal Obergefell v. Hodges.

Today, January 23, the marriage equality law officially takes effect. Thailand now recognizes the right of all couples, regardless of gender, to legally register their marriage.
At 6.15am, the first couple, 33 year old Ploynapas Jirasukon and 32 year old Kwanporn Kongphet arrived, hand in hand, to register their marriage. Together for 17 years since high school, the Bangkok-based couple radiated joy as they became Thailandās first officially recognised LGBTQ+ married couple.
Ploynapas shared her excitement, āWeāre thrilled to be the first couple to register our marriage. Itās a proud moment, but thereās still more to achieve, like equality in child custody and legal titles.ā
Sumalee, 64, and Thanaporn, 59, became the first same-sex couple to register their marriage at Bang Rak today.
Traveling all the way from Phetchabun, they chose Bangkok's "district of love" for this special occasion.
Permsap and Puangphet, the second couple to register their marriage in Pathumwan District, shared that they had waited 17 years for this moment, calling it a meaningful achievement.
Although they could have registered in Pai, they chose Pathumwan to express pride in exercising the same legal rights as other Thais. They wore traditional Tai Yai attire from Mae Hong Son, reflecting one partner's heritage, to make the occasion special.
They described the milestone as a collective success for the LGBTQ+ community, achieved through shared efforts.
They hoped future legal changes would address honorific titles for transgender individuals, ensuring fairness for all. The couple encouraged others to stay determined in the fight for equality, believing that persistence leads to success. They also urged countries without equal marriage laws to continue advocating for change.
Reflecting on a past accident, they shared the difficulties caused by the lack of legal recognition. Despite being together for eight years at the time, one was unable to sign medical consent due to the law, underscoring the need for equal marriage rights.
