In hetalia do the relationships between Governments effect relations between the personifications? Like in canon we see that England and France hate each other (If I remember correctly) and make comments about each other, is that just them clashing against each other as people or the relations they used to have before the 1900s? It would make sense if most nations now have good relations, but I feel like it would be funny to see their bad relations of the past

I keep on forgetting that the first Olympics were in hetalia, but there are some weird ass stuff that have happened at the Olympics. For instance, the marathon in St. Louis (1904? I can’t search rn but I will later) there were so many people that died and one guy took a car and won but then he was disqualified. But in the first Olympics there was this one Greek who managed to win but he wasn’t even trained to run a marathon, he was just a water bearer who wore Traditional Greek clothes (wooden shoes and about 20 kilos amount of clothes) and I would really love to see the characters reaction to this. Or maybe when an Australian won a medal in Winter Olympics games because everyone else fell down.

So, I was doing some research on Greek tragedies, and I found out about this Tragedy called Oresteia (Ορέστεια). I managed to learn about something that happened in 1903. This event is called Ορεστειακά. To sum up, Greece had 2 official languages at the time Δημοτική ( the Greek we speak now) and Καθαρεύουσα(A weird mix of ancient and modern Greek), there was this one professor who translated this tragedy from ancient to Modern greek but The second one. So this caused a huge dilemma in Athens and so People fought one another causing two deaths. This also happened before but I’ll explain later. So now my head is thinking about how Greece would be affected by this. Like would he have a headache? Maybe just a paper cut idk.

Would nations get traits off of their rulers? Or maybe physical traits? Like when Trump was in charge, what traits did America get? If he got any tbh. Probably they are affected by what the political party believes? Like some nations would be more liberal, I guess, but other nations are uh not really. I know that sometimes nations do not even want those bosses (a head canon of mine). I think that France didn’t want Marie Antoinette and Louis XIV ruling. Or Greece hating the monarchy (it wasn't even Greek to begin with).

I imagine Russia being the most awkward person in hetalia, especially during the USSR when Stalin was in rule. Russia himself gives off awkward vibe, but oh boy Stalin was notorious for being like this all the time. For example he one time stood up, no one else did, felt embarrassed, sat down again.

When and Where would nations be “born”? Like we know that Egypt was born in 3000bc and in Ancient Egypt. But I don’t think we know anyone else. I Head-canon that Greece was born during the Hellenistic period, due to all of the Greek lands uniting (Literally all except for Sparta) with the “help” of Phillip II and Alexander the Great.I feel like it would be ironic if he was born in Lacedaemonia (Sparta), even though he is more philosophical and a lover of history in Canon, but he would most likely be born in Athens bc of said reasons. Would France be born in Gaul or in the Franks? There are a lot more people I would want to question but idk history of a lot of nations

Japan’s and Greece’s friendship in Hetalia has always weirded me out, bc we don’t really care about one another in real life so I searched about the relations between these two. Japan’s national poet is a Greek guy. I AM NOT KIDDING. Leukadios Hearn (Greek-Irish) went to america to work as a journalist, he found out about Japan and liked it so much he moved there, married a japanese woman and had children. He was the man who brought the japanese mythology and a lot of other stuff to the west. So, maybe thats one thing.

I want to continue my “rant” about weird deaths in hetalia. Greece has died from chemicals but in a weird way, there used to be a prince of Greece in WW1 that loved wearing colourful socks, back then they used certain chemicals that if they go in your bloodstream you will die. So he went to the zoo and a fucking monkey bit him on his ankle and the chemicals went in him and died. Now that I am talking about ww1 there used to be a syphillis(how tf do you write that?)pandemic, so the government of every nation thought if they should or shouldn’t give condoms to their soldiers. Most did bc they knew that the soldiers would have sex despite told not to but the British decided not to do that. Yeah well 27% of Canadian soldiers caught syphillis, not bc they wanted to leave the war(that’s why other people caught syphillis, just to escape)but bc they wanted to have sex. Canada definitely caught an STD in ww1 but has kept it a secret. Also just found out that 2 presidents of France have died from a stroke during sex. Goddamn it France.

One topic I feel like doesn’t get talked about enough in Hetalia is weird deaths. Like since they have probably lived for a really long time, most have been alive since the Middle Ages, imagine the stupid stories they have about death. Yeah sure some deaths are and were serious but France has has two of his kings die bc of a door. NOT ONE BUT TWO BLOODY KINGS HAVE DIED FROM FUCKING DOORS. Let’s not forget about the whole “fuck around and find out”, probably most nations have died bc of animals. Hell I want to imagine that Ancient Greece’s head was split in half from a fucking turtle or that Australia died bc he swam too far and no one( New Zealand) bothered to swim to him to see if he was alive, or that he died in the goddamn Emu war (he didn’t die but he definitely felt dead inside from being made fun of from the other nations)

I was playing Hearts of Iron 4 but with the Kisserreich mod (supposed to be the world if the central powers won ww1), so I decided to play as Germany right? Well after 3 hours I decided to play as Canada. I got so confused bc Canada for some reason is the leader of the Entente and the leader of the Commonwealth. I am now imagining Canada in Hetalia either being looked upon as a good person to be around by the commonwealth or just the next best leader they have. However, I don't think England is a good leader or strategist at all, yeah sure he was able to conquer a lot but control that many countries? Too much, no wonder he left canada. And besides in canon (not sure but I think i have to look this up later) Canada is a good strategist so it would make sense to make him the leader. Not only in sense of Hetalia, but also Real life, since Canada is the uh lets say peaceful country. (Also thank you guys for the likes and reblogs! If you guys have any historical headcanons for the hetalia characters, or any headcanons i don't mind, then go for it and say it! I'm interested in any historical moment and any character!)

I feel like America is a shit driver mostly bc of one stupid moment in history. Back in 1895 in Ohio there were only two cars, in the whole fucking state the 2 cars managed to crash. And it’s not like they could go very fast back then, no you could walk faster than those cars. Literally every nation that drives makes fun of him but he doesn’t mind.

Can someone please answer this bc I’m confused. During 1915-1917 there was a national dispute between the king and the Prime minister in Greece what tf would Greece do in this? Like would he be in the side of king bc highest power or be with the PM since he has most of the people with him?

Just thinking about how psychotic Canada would be in Hetalia but especially in war.I’ll just give an example, in WW1 they used to take the small amount of POWs they had and dress them in goat skin and wool and send them to South America (I’m not sure if it’s correct but eh). Another one is that they invented the night trench raids and killed everything that breathed and stole everything. I’m just imagining a Canada covered in blood and shit he stole and England is looking at him like “This ain’t the dominion I raised”.

One thing I would like to see in Hetalia would be the raisin dispute between France and Greece. Back in the mid 1800s both countries made lots of raisins. However, France got hit with a fucking blight in the crops and couldn’t grow any, so they couldn’t sell it.So the Greeks decided to DESTROY EVERY OTHER TREE AND PLANTS THEY HAD TO PUT PLANTS TO MAKE RAISINS TO MAKE PROFIT. It worked for some years, I think, but then France got rid of the blight and was able to make raisins again so no one bought the Greek raisins and lots of people became homeless and poor. I Headcanons that even though Greece and France are good friends they fight for the best raisins to this day(Greece starts them).

I have been thinking, what would Greece’s and Egypt’s relations would be? During the revolutionary war of Greece one of the reasons it took so long was bc of Egypt’s fucking army destroying the Greek army bc they were trained by the French. So would they be close friends bc of the good relations in real life now or would Greece have hidden hatred for him bc of that?

Hello Tumblr. I have a question for all history enjoyers out there :)

((by history enjoyers I also mean people that are in any fandoms related to history))

beware! yapping session ahead ↓

So I've been to many fandoms, and recently, many of them have had a big connection to history. I've become interested in it since I joined the Countryhumans fandom (I know, problematic, but I'm out of that phase), and I always focused more on the historical side of the community. I found it interesting how those personifications of countries can describe different moments of history in different ways, and ever since then I started thinking about these historical moments not as just a random event that happened in the past, but as something that REALLY happened, as something that real people FELT and LIVED through, and as something that can serve as a reason of why we act like we do now.

As a part of all these historical fandoms, I realized that most of the communities know a LOT more stuff than I do about history, and for that I blame the incredible education system in my country. They focus too much on the history of the country itself, and when we started learning world history in 7th grade, it felt very... summarized. Heck, our history class doesn't even last a year, it lasts one semester out of the three. We didn't learn about the important Pharaohs in Egypt, we didn't learn about the important wars in Ancient Greece, we didn't even talk about the Roman Empire.

So my main question was:

Did any of you historians learn most of your history from school? Or did you have to learn everything yourself?

Side note: I'm on Easter holidays right now, and I plan to make a real big file with the detailed information for any historical happenings that I think are important to know :)

THE CHILDREN YEARN FOR THE FANART OF UKRAINE

THE CHILDREN YEARN FOR THE FANART OF UKRAINE

pov: You’re Poland; its 1620s and those "free armed folk" to the East, some of whom occasionally take part in wars on your side, have been more and more rebellious lately. You ride up to check what’s the deal — and as you pass one of the Cossacks, as they call themselves, the guy looks suspiciously similar to Ukraine herself…

***

1569. Lithuania had never been fond of Unia Lubelska that would unite the lands of the Grand Duchy with the Polish Republic. Yet Poland suddenly annexed Ruthenian – Ukrainian parts of the Duchy, using this move to pressure Lithuania back to negotiation tables.

Thus the era of Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth began.

For mainly Orthodox Christian Ruthenians, it only meant more tension with Catholics and szlachta nobles who realised they now acquired more serfs up for grabs.

There is no wonder then, that Ruthenians quite rapidly "cossack’ed" (покозачились) in such conditions. Many joined either free warrior communities or the rejestrowe wojsko zaporoskie under the polish crown’s service, but still able to do a fair deal of whatever the hell they wanted. Including uprisings against Poland, 1591-3 and 1594-6; allying with the Poles to almost(😭) burn Moscow to the ground in 1618; and occasionally raid Turks and Crimean Tatars.

But more importantly, paving the way for a powerful warrior state, autonomous from the Polish Republic by 1649, – Cossack Hetmanate (aka Hetman’schyna, Ruthenia, or simply Ukraine – all those + more names used at the time) – which famously takes its origins in Ukraine being pissed off.

The initial headcanon was that Ukraine ran away from the Commonwealth sometime after Lublin and pretended to be a guy to live amongst Cossacks and lead her raids and battles. Now, having read up some info on female Cossack leaders, I am thinking that whilst that might have been the case initially, by 1648 everyone knows she’s a woman and just chills about it ig

LOOK, LIETUKR HOLDING HANDS!!

LOOK, LIETUKR HOLDING HANDS!!

Now that I have your attention, here’s a really cool historical event🫶🏼

LOOK, LIETUKR HOLDING HANDS!!

Battle of Ula happened as a part of broader Livonian war that started when Muscovy (later: Russia) under Ivan the Terrible attacked the weakening state of Livonian Order. One small problem – that gradually dragged all its neighbours in. Initially, the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Ruthenia and Samogitia suffered losses, notably the city of Polatsk.

Then enter 1564. Muscovy’s army of ≈24 000 is rapidly advancing. So those ≈12 000 of Lithuanians and Ruthenians (self-identification term for Ukrainians and Belaruthians back then) figured that (early) modern problems require (early) modern solutions.

The battle destroyed all stereotyped ideas about military art of the early modern era. It happened not in a warm season, but in winter. It started neither in the morning nor in the afternoon, but in the evening, that is, it happened in the dark hours of the day. And it ended up a crushing defeat for Muscovy, partly due to sheer well cooperation between Lithuanians and Ruthenians, and overall their tactics, like a surprise attack of both army flanks on the forested Ula river.

Also even though they won, they didn’t manage to re-take Polatsk and some other vital terrirories to the East of the Grand Duchy from Muscovy YET (hence Belarus is not there). And this became one of the reasons the Grand Duchy completely united with Poland in 1569 (Unia Lubelska).

If Only I Had A Nickel Every Time I Came Across Brandenburg Described As A Sandbox…

If only I had a nickel every time I came across Brandenburg described as a sandbox…

…which is due much of the land being flat and covered with marsh and sand back at the time. So makes sense.

As you may or may not have noticed drawing silly chibis brings me joy lately. Also yes I have no clue what colour his eyes should be. Sometimes I feel like dark brown, sometimes like blueish-grey and sometimes it is the colour of sand. Yes. I will decide one day. Maybe.

A New Rareship Dropped/j

a new rareship dropped/j

i need a fic where they go to therapy together

now, numbers explained⬇️

! This is hugely simplified and by no means am I saying the situation was the same or anything; no it wasn‘t, but it‘s interesting to see the paralelles !

1 - referring to years of English/British rule over Ireland and Russian rule over Ukraine.

2 - in both cases native language/culture was heavily disadvantaged in favour of the coloniser’s language/culture. What a surprise.

3 - he’s talking about the Great Famine of 1845-51, exacerbated by Britain’s lack of reaction and continued exports of provision from Ireland. Popular attitude being that „God has sent famine to punish the Irish”.

4 - she’s talking about 1933 Holodomor famine, a man-made famine where the soviet version of the Russian empire deliberately took grain and other stuff from peasants forcibly as a part of „state grain requisition“ and also forbid emigration so peasants were trapped to starve. Duh.

5 - Irish rebellions against the British rule, notably in 1798, 1803, 1820s O’Connel movement, 1848, 1867 etccc

6 - Ukrainian rebellions under Russian rule, for example Mazepa in early 1700s, Koliivschyna 1768, Haydamaky early 1800s etc

7 - the first Universal of the Ukrainian Central Council in 1917 proclaimed autonomy, not a full separation from Russia.

8 - similarly, Ireland aimed to get home rule first, which also kinda means staying within the empire but having their own parliament. But the developments pushes both nations to a fight for independence eventually.

9 - Thus we get Irish war of independence 1919-21 and Ukrainian liberational struggle 1917-22.

10 - Ireland ended up in a civil war following the signing of the Anglo-Irish treaty in 1922-23; In Ukraine…ugh, it was a mess, but to cut the long story short, there was UPR in bitter rivalry with the Hetmanate, there were communists, anarchists, the Western Ukrainian People’s Republic with different struggles from the rest of the Ukrainian People’s republic, there were local leaders…yes. I mean. Mad shit.

11. Unlike Ukraine, that got de-facto occupied by USSR, Ireland, except for 6 counties, became almost independent following the 1920s struggles.

12. „Almost” because it emerged as a British dominion, a free state rather than the republic; all the way until 1949. And the tensions over those six counties imploded again in 1970s.

13. And Ukraine is still. Fighting for her life against Russia as I’m typing this. Friendly reminder.

I could go on for ages about this; the economic impact, the nature of independence movements – but I’ll spare you for now. Ukrainians, have a meme I made in 2023

At Some Kind Of Negotiations, Except They Share A Singular Braincell And They Fight Each Other Who Gets

At some kind of negotiations, except they share a singular braincell and they fight each other who gets to use it.

[Loads of yapping under the cut.]

This was supposed to be set in 1605-ish, around the outsets of Jülich succession crisis. Let’s pretend a fucking lamp is not there okay??Prussia is still a Polish fief duchy, so kinda irrelevant? Well, nevermind, he got dragged in as it is Anna of Prussia who carried Brandenburg‘s Electors‘ claim to Jülich-Kleve. And along with her husband, the Elector‘s son, she was in favour of more decisive actions regarding Jülich, as far as a pre-emptive strike. Whereas the Elector himself hesitated, supporting a more cautious approach.

At that point Prussia knows what is coming.(okay, maybe Brandenburg‘s Elector marrying the younger sister of his own son‘s wife juuuuust to make sure no other family ever gets a chance to claim Prussia was a bit too— nevermind). He got the point. He knows he has no other option really, and that he and Johann are kind of…stuck in this ever since the Grand Master of the Teutonic Order happened to be a Hohenzollern. And thus he makes what he can out of it, trying out what strings he can pull and when.

After all, he‘s painfully aware that Johann may seem like a schemer with a long-term plan, but in fact? Will hesitate and push for neutrality when a firm decision is most needed. If Brandenburg is good at something, that is masking his indecisiveness with cautiousness. And Prussia wonders how, or rather when he will be able to use this to his advantage…

[this writing stuff is very experimental and very much a WIP and both interpretations and characterisations are subject to change !!! Be warned !!!]

Oh, yeah looks like I have my time to create stuff back? I was just testing that one technique when you draw stuff in grayscale and then colour it. It‘s torture, but damn, I like the result. Shit took 4 days to render. And I just gave up on the bg sorry not sorry.

At Some Kind Of Negotiations, Except They Share A Singular Braincell And They Fight Each Other Who Gets

Meh, It’s always „how do you get along?” and not „how do you even get. there. at the first place.” I was just thinking – 700-ish km between Berlin and Königsberg. Imagine. 2-3 weeks horseback through swamp sand and shit and you’re there except it’s too late and noone cares. Must’ve been hell.

By the way physically they‘re..? 15-16, I would say here? Brandenburg is a bit older, not really much, but he‘s taller lol.

At Some Kind Of Negotiations, Except They Share A Singular Braincell And They Fight Each Other Who Gets

when the meeting is going so bad you gotta pull out a song and dance that wont exist for another 61 years. (A v cool song that i didnt use fully so click here to listen to it!!!)

Edit : FUCK I FORGOR TO SAY THANKS TO @hetaestoniahq FOR THE ESTONIAN TRANSLATION! THANK U SM!!! THE ACTUAL ESTONIAN U SEE IN THE ANIMATIC IS THANKS TO THEM!!

(historical notes under read more)

Ok! The animatic is mostly comedic and very much started out as a shitpost (hence the fact that nobodys clothes are era apropriate etc) , but i did make it with history in mind so heres some history!

the Bulduru conference of 1920 was a conference that lasted from the 6th of august to the 6th of september 1920 in Bulduri (a part of the city of Jūrmala), Latvia. (Latvia was the host which is the reason i'm having Latvia be the main one who talks to ppl through the animatic)

It was a conference between Latvia, Lithuania, Finland, Estonia, Poland and Ukraine (Ukrainian Peoples's Republic) (sort of. Ukraine was either a member or an observer depending on the source.)

The UK and France were observers and Belarus (Belarusian Democratic Republic) was an unofficial observer (again. some sources say they were just an observer and some say they were unofficial).

Belarus and Ukraine at that moment held none of their land.

(Ukraine had lost the Polish-Ukranian war and was losing the Ukranian-Soviet war due to a lot of reasons that I'm not the best person to explian)

(one of them was France favouring Poland - a reason that i am mentioning bcs one of the things that i held in my mind during this whole animatic was the complex relations between the Baltic+Co countries and France and UK. both sides understood very much that they were just using eachother to get what they want. to France and UK these seperatist countries were needed as a shield against the Soviets (but they would have really prefered the Russian Empire to still exist and win the Russian civil war instead) and the Baltic+Co needed the wests guns and resources to win against the Soviets and/or Germans when they were involved.)

(Belarus, from what I can tell, lost all of its land to its Soviet alternative Socialist Soviet Republic of Byelorussia very fast after German troops left its teritory. People who know Belarussian history better than me please correct me if im wrong.)

The Bulduru conferences whole deal was creating a Baltic Union between Poland, Finland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia.

A goal that was ultimatly hopeless due to Polands and Lithuanians disagreements over Vilnius and their subsequent war.

A war the others tried really hard to be neutral on - wanting both the Poles and the Lithuanians as allies. (Latvia once asked Estonia to make a Baltic Entente with them and Lithuania (and Finland if they wanted) - to which Estonia declined because they didn't want to get on Polands bad side (also Lithuania was also against the idea bcs their whole plan was trying to befriend the Soviet and German states in the interwar period while Latvia and Estonia saw them as a danger). Later in 1934 a Baltic Entente would still be made - but as history would later tell - it didn't really acomplish much, due to lots and lots of reasons that i wont bore you with atm)

(also - just in general - if im wrong abt any of this history feel free to correct me. i did do reasearch but all of it was in latvian and english so i can very much be wrong abt things that consern the other nations)

None of the agreements that were signed during the Bulduru conference were ever ratified.

Can I request Ukraine? Idk if you draw historical setting, but 1917-1919 (Ukrainian People’s Republic) would be cool🥰

MAMMA MIA. I'M SO SORRY FOR THE 10 DAYS RESPONSE 😭😭 but anyways,,

Can I Request Ukraine? Idk If You Draw Historical Setting, But 1917-1919 (Ukrainian People’s Republic)

honestly idk much about ukraine's history,, but i did look up the outfit for this one so i hope this is accurate enough! ^^

Hetalia Ukraine Headcanon #2 – or, rather, my take on Ukraine in Hetalia canon.

upd: I might have worded it a bit shitty, but the entire purpose of this post is that „canon/common fannon“ uwu crybaby Ukraine is bulshit and fuck canon we ball anyway. That I will be re-creating her character the way I want, and that‘s literally it. Damn. Pls don‘t misinterpret things, I‘m not defending Himaruya or anything

This is something that has to be clarified before I proceed, and even before I answer to any further asks.

I think of Ukraine in „canon Hetalia" as Russia's perspective, what he tells others about Ukraine and what he wants them to think of her, for his own purposes.

Because, if you recall, the episode where she is introduced (Axis Powers, ep 42), it is Russia telling England about her. Just like episode 43, it's Russia's memories and perspective. I hate that this fact is often overlooked, as it makes total sense for Russia to want others to see Ukraine as a weak crybaby that is dependant on him. In fact, this no shit is the attitude russians have to ukrainians. Almost inferior, (quote) unable to fend for themselves. It is not cute. It is very much toxic. The scarf moment is extremely fucking funny. Because, (and again, this is Russia's memories), Ukraine gives him her favorite scarf. But what people overlook, is that in return she asks (in dub) FOR CONTROL FROM BLACK SEA TO POLAND. HER TERRITORIES. THIS- THIS IS NOT A CUTE MOMENT. SHE IS TRYING TO GET AWAY. AS SHE ALWAYS HAS. FOR CENTURIES. Or, in sub, she asks for „inheritance rights to Kyivan Rus", so again, reclaiming a part of her identity. After which, russia concludes that maybe they've never been close at all. srsl I wish russia realised that in real life and fucked off already

To me, this is the first moment that shows that there is much more to Ukraine than what we see, and that Russia must in no way be trusted on his word when it comes to her.

Especially since In her next appearence, Gakuen Hetalian Newspaper Club part 1, Ukraine is nothing like that. She wants to join the choir club, where the baltic trio and others are, and we find out that the choir is targeted by the so-called „soviet club". Lmao. Nor she is in any of the Halloween episodes she appears in subsequently. Moreover, in the 2013 haloween series, Ukraine is shown dressed up as a reference to a Ukrainian(!!!) urban legend about a ghost train. So, she is not afraid to express her identity even at that point. Yes, she is emotional, but not a complete mess of a crybaby whose every 1 in 2 words is „Russia". Which further backs my theory.

The latest appearence, where in Chapter 389 of Hetalia world stars, Ukraine asks Lithuania to „sent spare paper Russias" to her if he ever gets any, because, quote „THIS RUSSIA IS OBEDIENT, QUIET, AND LISTENS TO WHAT I SAY".

Does this sound like a weak crybaby Ukraine whom Russia was describing to you?

No. That's the point.

Btw the only point in history I can think of where she could be referring to when she says it's „like we've gone back in time", is 7th - 10th century; when the principality of Suzdal (later: Muscovy→Russia) was just freshly colonized by Kyiv and Polatsk (later Ukraine and Belarus) and was paying fiefs to them. Which is like, literally 40 years before Suzdal’s prince plundered and burnt Kyiv down in 1169. A first russo-ukrainian war for you.

So, even from "canon hetalia", the idea of Ukraine's character that this fandom often percieves her as derives mostly from Russia's POV. Which is sad, ironic (represents the influence of russian propaganda irl), but also thanks fuck, this means we see so little of her that her personality can be easily interpreted in a multitude of ways that reflect history and reality way better

She’s Glad Dick-tators Do Not Live Forever

she’s glad dick-tators do not live forever

72 years ago, on the 5th of March, the fucker responcible for the forced collectivisation, holodomor famine, the great purge and the execution of an entire generation of writers, poets, artists, thinkers that were first led to believe into a communist utopia; mass deportations, constant and brutal supression and destruction of national identity — and that to speak only of Ukraine, the list goes on and on, — was found dead in a puddle of his own piss, for he had paranoicly fired the only guard and doctors that still somehow tolerated him at that point. Joseph Stalin I mean.

I drew Ukraine bc the café in Washington in the original photo was serving free borscht (борщ) that day, a Ukrainian dish. And who‘s beside her on the right? Well. I suppose there‘d be LOTS of candidates among the nations. I‘ll leave that up to you to imagine ;)
