Bridget Flinn At Solomon Fine Art

Bridget Flinn at Solomon Fine Art

Last Thursday I attended the opening of Bridget Flinn's exhibition Not Far from Here at Solomon Fine Art, Balfe Street, Dublin 2 D02 T802 which is next door to the Westbury Hotel. The venue was packed. Everyone was in good humour which made the event very enjoyable. Bridget's work was pleasing and restful to the eye. I was intrigued by her preoccupation with grafitti that featured in many of her paintings including 'Stacked Reflection' and 'Broken Baths', two of my favourites. Not Far from Here will run until 24th June 2023.

Visiting the RHA

Yesterday, I visited the RHA, 15 Ely Place, Dublin 2 to see the 188th RHA Annual Exhibition on its last day. It was my second time attending this show and was worth the effort. I enjoyed viewing work by familiar artists such as Ken Drew, Richard Gorman, Eithne Jordan, Alice Maher, Mick O’Dea, John Shinners and Donald Teskey along with some new names. Unassembled at the Lab

Last night, I attended the opening of ‘Unassembled’ at the Lab Arts Centre featuring the work of ten artists completing the IADT Masters in Art and Research Collaboration (ARC). The artists, having studied at the Institute of Art, Design and Technology include Brenda Brady, Anishta Chooramun, Heather Cody, Penelope Collins, Collette Farnon, Lisa Freeman, Marie-Louise Halpenny, Marie Phelan, Dylan Ryan & Audrey Walshe. The venue was packed making it difficult to see any of the work. However, the speeches were positive and short. I meet a few nice people at the venue. ‘Unassembled’ will run until Sun 19th Jan 2020 at the Lab, 1 Foley St., Dub 1.

Michael Canning at Oliver Sears

🪴🪴🪴🪴🪴🪴🪴🪴🪴

I attended the opening the Michael Canning's exhibition 'Les Yeux' tonight at the Oliver Sears Gallery, 33 Fitzwilliam Square Upper, Dublin 2 tonight. The event was quiet and informal. I loved Micheal's paintings of plants set against plain backgrounds. The fine detail of the twigs and leaves contrasted with the simplicity of sky and minimalist landscapes. His three small paintings of tree trunks intrigued me. To my eye, they were a new development in his work. His exhibition will run until 13th June 2025.

Paul Mc Kinley at Kevin Kavanagh

Last night, I attended Paul McKinley's exhibition at the Kevin Kavanagh Gallery called 'Pomegranate'. The venue was packed. Paul's paintings were quite varied in size and subject matter. These paintings included landscapes, interiors and abandoned places like an empty swimming pool. His exhibition will run until 15th July at Chancery Lane, Dublin 8.

Colin Davidson at Oliver Sears

Last night, I attended the opening of Colin Davidson’s exhibition ‘Variations’ at the Oliver Sears Gallery. I was delighted to see all of his flower paintings. Although I loved Colin’s street scenes and portraits, I found his latest change in subject matter quite refreshing. I preferred his paintings painted in lighter colours especially ‘Dorabella’ with its yellow flowers on a sky blue background. The gallery was busy with a relaxed atmosphere. Colin’s exhibition will run until 24th Jan 2019 at the Oliver Sears Gallery, 29 Molesworth Street, Dub 2.

John Paul at the Ireland Institute

I also attended the opening of John Paul's exhibition 'The Characters of Dublin' at the Ireland Institute. Many of the paintings featured statues situated around Dublin including the depiction of Phil Lynott on Harry Street. However I loved the faces of the portraits of real people. They were so full of life. John Paul had finished one painting the previous day which featured the Shelbourne Hotel. The paint was still drying on this painting. John Paul's exhibition will run until next Wed 4th March 2020 at the Ireland Institute, 27 Pearse Street, Dublin 2.

Ivan Panov & Ann Mc Kenna at Gallery Zozumus

Last night, I attended the opening of 'Wild Things - The Prints They Leave...' at Gallery Zozimus, 57 Francis Street, Dublin 8. This exhibition features ceramic sculpture by Ivan Panov and paintings by Ann McKenna. Both artists had created their work on the team of animals.

Ivan's sculptures are full of charm and humor. He repurposes items in his work e.g a lamp stand to denote an owl's feet. Ann's paintings glow with life and personality. I particularly liked her painting of an orangutan, very well observed.

Lots of people had come to the venue. The atmosphere was quite relaxed.
