I designed a mother for Grimmer! We don't know crap about his past so I may as well do my own headcanons. Her name is Elli.
For background, I was thinking she's a single mother who took care of Grimmer. Until the cold war came. Elli was a journalist and she secretly worked amongst groups of people who disagreed with communist ideologies.
And then, a friend of Elli decided to rat her out. Which led to her being politically persecuted for being part of a group that expressed disdain against communism.
Elli, with her little son at the time, had no option but to flee.
Her objective was to cross the Berlin Wall with her son, and got very far. Unfortunately, not far enough. Grimmer's mother ended up being shot at the border and he was then taken to Kinderheim 511.
And that's the context I came up with lolol
