Local Bookstores Are The Best

Part One (because I'm sure I will continue to have many things to say on this subject)

There's this one super awesome person who works at the small town local bookstore I frequent. They read over a hundred books a year. They work at three other jobs, including the locally owned game store down the street. They play D&D. They have a shrine in the front of the store when you first walk in dedicated to their recommendations from the hundreds of books they consume. I walk into the store and they are listening to yet another book. Or turning the pages of one. They once turned down the volume "just in case you wanted to read this series so I don't spoil it for you". They tell you the best RPG stuff to get and where to get the coolest dice. They talk books and authors of any genre any timeframe. They help you weigh the pros and cons of starting certain series, or deciding which ones to purchase first. They are the chillest person known to humankind. They are my favorite person to see in that bookstore and I hope both they and the bookstore gain immortality if that's something they'd be interested in.

Walmart employee story time.

(Disclaimer: I am not a Walmart employee yet. This is about a Walmart employee I encountered.)

My sister and I went to Walmart for our biweekly grocery expenditures (that's how you use that word, right?) and while we're in the dairy section "Come Sail Away" by Styx is playing. Heck yes so I'm singing along, it's especially fun to do the chorus. I'm doing it quietly because I don't want to embarrass my sister in public or anything but in a moment I look over and there a few refrigerators away is a Walmart employee stocking and... also singing!

Anyhow the song fades out and my sister and I go about out business but when that guy was done with what he was doing he approached me and said, "Hey... so I uh. I noticed you were singing along to the other song. It made me really happy to hear someone was singing that song, I was singing along too."

:D .

He was really nice and went back to work but man that stuck with me.

Oh yeah! Storytime!

So my dear best friend took me out thrifting at the end of the semester because she wanted better fighting pants and I told her I had never been thrifting before. Away we went even though I had basically no money. I set myself an amount I could spend.

We get there and look around pants for a bit, find some, then have a bit of time before swordfighting to explore. I want her to show me everything she would show someone who hasn't been thrifting. (We found some awesome knickknacks in the back as well as heck cheap books and DVDs. I even found 3 Baby Einstein DVDs. But I digress.)

Well, apparently you can't go thrifting without checking out the shirts. So we're perusing shirts that feel nice and out of nowhere,

Baseball shirt with the words "I heart Hawkeye" in glitzy purple"

Remember how I said my Dad had this weird thing for the Hawkeye show? It's a Christmas tradition at our house by his insistence.

Now this is a women's small or medium shirt. Obviously not going to fit my dad. So I weigh the pros and cons. Ask my brother. He responds with "dude get one for me" (this is a thrift store and I think it's handmade but we won't tell him that) so I take that as a green light. If Dad doesn't want it, at least my beanpole of a brother will rock it.

And, come on, it's 3 dollars.

oh yeah what I meant by this! watched Interstellar with my brothers last night. two of them are science nerds! so well one has seen it and one hadn't before

so afterward I sat at a table with the one that hadn't priorly seen it and asked scale of 1 to 10 how realistic he felt it was. he got immediately hung up on the mathematics of the time as portrayed on screen, we jabbered about that for a while

... and second brother comes in. "Okay what you NEED to know," he says, and he's apparently talked this over with the fandom several times over, and he just takes off in this conversation and here I am sitting between two brothers who are going off about the science of well everything practically

inwardly I'm kinda making this face :D because I miss these sorts of arguments (and also I get to be a part of it)

and bro

okay yeah I could go into the whole wormholes and black hole/white hole and time shift and that sort of thing, it was a good conversation, but I'll save that for another time

and there was the whole me bringing up The Martian as more realistic and then us picking it apart too (tbh it's very good tho) but again not the point of tonight's tale

the point being

loved ones are so precious

loved ones are so precious when they're engaging in the thing they love

love languages can be arguing over science technicalities in science fiction and cinema

I love these people so much and I love that I get to be theirs.

bringing back the interstellar fandom one cranky science nerd at a time

adorable dad thing today: watching the man cook

for context, when he was a young college student he worked at a fancy restaurant in the middle of nowhere. From time to time he pulls out his skills from that restaurant whether it's cooking or random waiter things or whatnot. He absolutely loves cooking. He's so good at it too.

And, I don't know, there's just something about it. Him opening the oven to pull out three pans of golden beautiful enchiladas made with such specificity and love. Enough to feed his family for two days and also a couple of young adults who were stopping by for food. The love. Small batch huge heart. So much care.

He used to hate complex foods. He used to be a horrible picky eater who didn't like tomatoes or mushrooms or anything red or anything grown up. (This was before I knew him, but I know stories.) He used to hate cooking. And then, to be a dad, he learned. He learned for work to support his family and then he learned for love to feed his family. And decades later he's still at it. And it's incredible. I cannot fathom food as good as my dad's.

Forget adorable. My dad is precious.

Fun neat fact my original blog name was going to be mydadisadorable and it was going to have short meaningful posts about adorable things my dad does out of pocket and sometimes other people's adorable qualities too. Unfortunately the blog name was taken. I will however attempt to still post adorable things about people because people are adorable!!
