Anyone else feel like life (especially in America) is like gambling in a rigged game. Like oh you have to pay $70 for each college application and even if you are a solid applicant at least 75% will reject you. Oh you want to apply to jobs. Well you need a cover letter that is specific for why you want to earn minimum wage at Starbucks and you better not put down that you need a job. We don’t want any one who isn’t committed to our corporate overlords. Oh you want to volunteer in a lab. Well not sure that you are the right fit for our lab right now. And don’t get me started on trying to get a response from potential PhD advisors that you email.

I’m just really tired.

So it's come my attention that there are a lot of students, particularly in humanities and social sciences disciplines, who need to hear this, so here goes:

Do the readings.

Oh my God, just do the readings. I promise, it gets easier once you get into the habit of it.

What makes a good student? Doing the readings. Literally just doing the readings is enough to make you a good student.

Optimist: Glass half full

my trick for getting through grad school is learning to navigate the quadrants with all their nuances

Chasing a dream can be quite isolating, indeed.

Fifth Classroom...

I was in a library at night.

It was just me and thirty-five adults and the occasional handful of kids.

China, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Brazil, Mexico, Columbia, Haiti, and more…

Different cultures, different educational backgrounds, different English language speaking abilities…

These were my students.

I taught them English, having to provide my students with different activities and materials in order to best work with their level of competence.

I taught them American culture not for the sake of seamless integration into America but so they would better understand the strange customs of their new home.

If they failed to secure a babysitter then I assigned a book report.

Advanced students helped lower students read and write a brief summary.

I supplied children with toys, drawing tools, and entertainment while we waited.

I did this for two years before going to grad school for TESOL…

there’s something healing and beautiful about finishing your masters degree to the soundtrack of your middle school self

but then again, I guess that the cures of the oldest daughter: the planner, and the celebrator, and the designated driver, and the giver only to also be the butt of every joke and the forgotten one in the back…

zoom is literally the downfall of proper academia. what do you mean the university has a delayed opening and I've been sitting on a class zoom call since 9 am (and will be on it till noon) instead of playing in the snow and recharging. why am I raising my little virtual hand to talk about the environment (which I know 0 about, do not ask me how I'm doing in this class the answer is not great) when I could be dicking around with my friends in the snow giggling and enjoying life. I know that I'm a graduate student but we need fun and whimsy (and a god damn break) too.

Finally winter break (thank fuck). I haven’t opened my computer in 3 days, just finished reading my first multi chapter fic in months, did both arts and crafts, woke up and the time ended in pm, and haven’t uttered a singular word to anyone in days but my cat… let’s play a game, is it:

A: burn out and now that I’m on school break it’s hitting hard

B: mental illness that can finally present now that the blanket of stress that is school has been lifted

c: all of the above

How Does The Drug Got Excreted / Eliminated From The Body?

The entire University of California (10 schools!) just called for an official UAW backed strike due to the Palestine protests! So proud of the tens of thousands of grad students putting their labor on the line for the cause.

In light of this I wanted to share the most relevant design from my fundraiser again, the sabo-tabby (aka black cat, wildcat, sab cat) with a keffiyeh. This is an old IWW symbol still commonly used for strikes and labor organizing today. I met the friend I am fundraising for through his labor activism (I started asking him too many questions and he recruited me to help haha). He is an incredibly clever and effective activist who has been involved in a lot of successful labor movements, and this symbol is very dear to him (as is the keffiyeh of course).

As usual ALL PROCEEDS from my shop are for this friend who is Palestinian. The extra income will help him support his friends and family in Palestine and around the rest of the Levant who are being hurt directly and/or financially by the attacks on Gaza, the raids and economic devastation in the West Bank and the collateral damage in surrounding countries. He will donate anything his family doesn't need to the Palestinian charities he works with.

The military relies on STEM professionals to build their war machine; it's up to us to pressure our colleagues to avoid that sort of work.

We're also working on putting together a statement on Palestine. If you have a lot of colleagues on your side and particularly if you're in a program like engineering, physics, astronomy or applied math (with a lot of military applications) you should try to see where your funding is coming from and support grads in divesting from ethically questionable research. I won't say too much about what we're doing because I don't want to risk doxing my friend, but here are some examples of statements from grads at the Goldman School of Public Policy and the UCSC Astronomy Department. We (STEM students in particular) are the next generation of minds behind the military-industrial complex. It's up to us to make it clear we will not be complicit in work that supports genocide.

I've made a bunch of poppy designs, but the Faqqua iris is the more official national flower of Palestine, I figured I should do something with it too. You can find the above design here.

As usual ALL PROCEEDS are for my Palestinian best friend, to take care of his loved ones. He will donate any his family doesn't need to the Palestinian charities he works with. He's hoping to donate most of it if possible, he always gives everything he can to those in need, which is really impressive because he has never had much for himself in his life. He's always the first person to buy food for the homeless people outside the cafe, or send a paycheck home to help his relatives, or bring food and supplies to a labor action. I currently have his nice coat because he put it on me when I was cold and told me to keep it (I'm going to wash it and give it back anyway, haha). Outside of a few sentimental possessions most of his stuff ends up being given away sooner or later to someone he thinks needs it more.

He felt weird about accepting this charity at first, I had to convince him to hold onto the money from this fundraiser for his own loved ones (some of whom are definitely in a really precarious position) rather than give it all away to charities immediately. He's so generous, even to his own detriment sometimes. You guys, I'm feeling really emotional today, I love him so fucking much. God I hope things get better soon.

Palestine Designs

My Palestinian best friend is an absolutely brilliant scientist and all around amazing person. He genuinely tries to help everyone he meets. It is heartbreaking seeing my dearest friend in so much pain. I wish there was more I could do to help.

A lot of his friends and family all around the Levant are being hurt directly and/or financially by the war. ALL PROCEEDS from the Palestine designs I have been selling will go first and foremost to helping his girlfriend afford to join him in America safely, and after that helping his other loved ones weather this war.

I know it's not much but my hope is to at least ease the financial toll this will take on him, grad students don't have much to begin with and having to stretch what he does have to protect those he loves is going to be really tough as this conflict drags on. I don't want him to have to leave his research, I can't tell you much for his privacy but I assure you it is brilliant work and he loves it so much. No scientist should have to choose between their passion and the safety of their family.
