Marie’s homeland kingdom lacked all the 'modern conveniences' that others took for granted. Isolation only deepened the inhabitants’ unfamiliarity with the outside world. So, when she was gifted a Den-Den Mushi, Marie was completely bewildered. Not only that she has no idea how to use it, but she was also terrified of possibly hurting the creature. Even the thought of making calls and communicating through such a device filled her with genuine anxiety.

Given Marie's background and medieval-like structure of her home island, embroidery was a part of the education of girls from aristocratic families.

Even though it became more of a routine habit for her, embroidery still gives her a sense of calm.
