Hundreds of women were raped and burned alive during the chaos after a Rwandan-backed rebel group entered the Congolese city of Goma last week.
The deputy head of the UN peacekeeping force based in Goma, Vivian van de Perre, said that while several thousand men managed to escape from the prison, the area reserved for women was set on fire.
“They were all raped, and then they set fire to the women’s wing. They all died afterwards.”
The full details of the attack are still unclear, but this believed to be the worst, most violent attack in the recent M23 conflict in eastern DRC.
In the country, often called the "rape capital of the world," widespread sexual violence is often used as a weapon of war by armed groups like M23.
In DRC, legal protections are weak, and survivors face stigma and rejection. The crisis in the DRC is not just a regional issue—it is a human rights emergency.

Nesma is trying to raise funds to evacuate her family from Gaza. Their home was bombed and destroyed, her father captured and tortured by the IOF, and several members of her family were martyred. Her surviving family members are suffering from illnesses caused by hunger, infrastructural collapse, and medical deprivation. They have had to flee bombing and ground troops several times since they were displaced, and are currently in Rafah.
Nesma’s family is quite large, and the fees required by the Egyptian government to enter via Rafah crossing are very high. Her campaign has made excellent progress, being about 75% complete. However, donations have stalled, and little progress has been made recently.
Please help this family find safety and a fresh start after their months of suffering

“Those poor boys”
“She deserves to be punished too.”
“I’m not saying I support rape, but-”
“Sorry to say - she deserved it.”
“She put herself in harm’s way”
“But if she was fingered, then that’s not rape.”
“She ruined their lives.”
