What can go wrong: A list of gem defects
This post is simply a very long Theory on the different types of defects that a gem can have. Warning: VERY LONG POST. On with the show!
This defect causes notable differences in stature. Undercooking causes longer and thinner stature that normal, whereas overcooking causes shorter and stockier stature. This defect varies in intensity, but if too intense the gem may have issues holding its form together.
Most gems have some impurities in the form of trace minerals, that cause harmless individual variation in appearance. Some of them, however, can be actively harmful to a gems' appearance or purposes. Common effects include:
Unusual coloration
Specks in gemstone
Lack of or Unintended abilities
This occurs when a gemstone forms in a shape not intended for the gem (i.e. amythest with a Jasper Cut). Its effects include:
Coloration issues (the example gem may have an orange tint and/or stripes)
Undesirable or broken features
Unusual weapon
Two forms of this defect exist. The effects the first originate from an unbalanced or odd mix of essence. The effects of this form can range from minor coloration issues to the entirely wrong gem emerging from the injection site. This is the less problematic form, in that it doesn’t nessecarily damage the gem and can result in new discoveries.
The other form occurs when the essence is not mixed properly or at all, resulting in a bicolored gem. This form is far, far more volatile than the first. Dangerous features include:
Multiple personalities
Difficulty holding form
Extra or missing limbs
Higher vulnerability of major impurities
This is umbrella term for issues with the injection process. They include:
Inert gemstone: These gemstones won't form a gem and can’t be used as a power source.
Underdrilling: The injector does not drill deep enough for all limbs to form. In some gems, this can be resolved by poofing and allowing to reform naturally, but this doesn’t work on gems not designed for combat.
Overheating: The injector gives too much initial heat to the incubation process, causing a mishappen or cracked/broken gemstone. These gems are almost never able to form.
Undernutrition: The earth around the injection site is lacking or devoid of minerals and nutrients. This results in anything from a pale gem, low energy and fatigue, to an inert gemstone.

Okay... This got a lot more attention than I expected and I must do this now.
Question for y’all
How would you feel about a Steven Universe high school au? It would be based off those promo drawings of the gems, but set in America rather than Japan. Let me know what you think.
Here are some of the drawings btw:
I got them off the wikia, in case you were wondering

So... That leak, huh?
I lowkey didn’t believe the corrupted Steven theory at first but now I’m legit terrified?! Our babey is not okay?! Also the gems are handling it really badly, like absolutely abysmally?! IS GREG OKAY?!!
Okay just needed to get that out of my system, thanks for listening.

Requirements for a perfect gem
How to make Jasper, basically.
The mixture of essence must be 100% balcanced and pure.
The surrounding rock must have an unusually high mineral and nutrient content.
NO impurities, either damaging impurities or trace minerals can be present.
The incubation must be unusually hot. I gathered this from the glass around Jasper's emerging hole, where her emergence may have melted the sandstone around her.
The injection surface must be 100% smooth.
I made the criteria deliberately difficult to show just how rare a perfect specimen of a gem is. That’s why Jasper is much higher in the Caste system than you would expect of an ordinaru quartz.

Octo Types
So I noticed a few distinct different types of octoling in splatoon's lore and gameplay, and I thought would share my ideas about them with y’all. Here we go!
These are the Octolings that you see in story mode. Their distinct features include:
Identical hair colour and outfits, basically clones
All female
Ink and Octo forms do not reflect hair.
These Octolings are the playable ones. They have a much softer demeanour than Type 1, and have more variation.
Their entire tentacles change colour with their ink.
Their eyes appear very timid, but also calculating.
Their Octo forms reflect their ink and tentacle colour.
Only two examples of this type exist, Marina Ida and Dedf1sh/Ahato. They have the most variation between individuals. The distinctive features present include:
Compentency with DJ equipment
Coloured fingertips
Tipped hair. In the case of marina, these tips change depending on her team colours.
It could mean nothing, but the differences are so acute that it's unlikely to be meaningless. It could indicate different species, or a type of caste system (I.e. Type 3 work as Idols/remixers, Type 1 work as common soldiers).

Splatoon Ink Headcannons
Hey yall! Some of the main assumptions that I make in this post are related to the Splatoon Manga, which is level 2 cannon. Read with skepticism!
Low tide ink is unique in that it cannot splat an ink based creature, but it can still ink turf normally.
It is often used in specialty organised turf wars among children and sick/disabled cephalopods. They sometimes have issues respawning correctly, so the concept of splatting is removed from the game.
Using low tide ink does not require an ink tank, as it is a low enough density to be exclusively made in the ink sack.
It is often used as bath water, because of it's harmlessness.
As high tide ink is very dangerous, its transport and possession is heavily controlled by the government.
It is considered highly dangerous due to the fact that it permanently kills both ink based and non ink based creatures.
Used by the Military, Police, Assassins, and The Squidbeak Splatoon.
It must be kept in special containers that look a little bit like soy sauce sachets.
Normal weapons cannot use high tide ink, special weapons must be acquired. These weapons look more like modern day weapons.
High tide ink is produced by compressing normal ink and scraping off the top layer of impurities. This process is repeated 5 to 6 times.
Ink based creatures are able to change their own ink colour. Some especially skilled cephalopods can change their tentacle patterns. It makes for a great party trick!

Kill la Kill headcannon
Ryuko's glove (the one she used to power up Senketsu) left a permanent scar on her arm from the times when she used it. She doesn’t really mind, she sees it as a connection to him.
Just finished watching Kill la Kill... Wow. Emotions. I might write a fanfic

I wouldn’t take any chances either
