“Oh Mr Sheffield!” - Fran Fine
Look, after a hard separation, I am very much okay with the fact that Keeper of The Lost Cities is not that good of a book, and falling off the bandwagon ends is sad, but objectively not my fault.
But like- I can't stop thinking about it.
Elvin babies come out talking. So like... do you prepare talking points?
Baby Jolie: Hello Father
Grady *panicking*: What's your favourite colour?
Baby Jolie *deadpan*: Rebellion
Doesn't this just feel exactly like something Charles would do.
"OH MY GOD JAKE there were these girls and they were SO COOL!" "Did I tell you about the time we used our mouths to-" "Charles we know." "One of them slapped me and I think I died and went to heaven."
I don't know if anyone else thought this but I've just finished watching Season 1 of Stranger Things for the first time (I know I'm late to it but please no spoilers!!!) and did anyone else think that Will was going to get pregnant with slug things like that dude in Round the Twist did that one episode?
This cannot be a coincidence. In nine months Will is going to be the proud mother to an inter dimensional slug baby.
And on another note Round the Twist was...something. I remember loving it as a kid so I went back and watched a bunch of episodes on youtube and oh man. It's a lot.
ID Dates. Remember when there was that random conversation in the middle of Neverseen and Forkle was like 'Oh, you're not actually 13 you're 14 because in elf we start counting life at conception. Birthdays? tf are those, we have ID dates which have no actual purpose.' And at first I thought this was just a poorly executed move to narrow the age difference and speed up Sophie's dating life, but re-reading it, the implication is that elves are pro-life, because the argument for that is that life begins at conception. I'm not sure if it was inadvertent or not, but does this mean elves are anti abortion? And does this mean Shannon Messenger is pro-life too? IDK, not sure how I feel about this one.
How can they not notice Oralie is Sophie's biological mum if they have both of their DNA?
Everything about abilities manifesting. Average age is 12-15 right? Imagine if when you manifested your voice cracked. That would 100% make the book better.
Tam and Linh's hair dye. Namely where do I get this stuff. But also...it's molten silver. Surely it would just burn off their hair. Imagine them attempting to make their super powerful statement and ending up with a pile of burnt hair mixed with goopy silver and Linh trying not to laugh while Tam stews.
I think one of the reasons the first wives club was so good was because it was about women supporting women. A lot of comedies pit women against each other and 90% of the time it's because they're fighting over guys. Mean Girls and Bride Wars and the like. High School Musical 2 is a prime example. But then there's these brilliant movies like Pitch Perfect and the First Wives club where it's about friendships and platonic love which are really brilliant. They're refreshing. I watched it and for a movie that was made in the 90s it has aged REALLY well. In the first wives club even though they're angry at the young women their husbands are dating, it's not made out to be their fault. It's more aimed at their husbands.
It is so funny. I think i cried laughing. Also kudos to them for having a lesbian character who was shown in such a positive light. I cannot believe this was made in the 90s. (I've mentioned this like three times I know) The mum is so supportive about the her daughter coming out and makes a huge effort to connect with her.
To whoever invented the pineapple freddo frogs;
you suck
and I hope the next time you go to the cinema a child is crinkling a wrapper really loudly in an important and quiet scene.
Can we all take a minute to remember back to 1926 when Agatha Christie went to a spa for a couple of days and the whole of England proceeded to fall into a state of chaos as it thought she'd gone missing.
She was the top story in all the newspapers.
The entire police force was looking for her.
And the real kicker is that her brother had told the police that she was at a spa and they'd just said 'nah can't be' and not bothered to check.
My parents told me to go and watch this, so I was initially very very skeptical, because they told me Crocodile Dundee was gonna be good and that is a whole separate disaster.
But it's...so good.
Most of the jokes have aged so well and it is eerily clever how quickly it can transition from laugh out loud funny to bawling my eyes out sad.
I love all the characters so much (Except Frank. Hello Frank) And it was made in the 70s. But there are still elements of it that are progressive today, and the themes and ideas about war are pretty timeless.
None of my friends are watching it, and the MASH community on Tumblr is frighteningly small. I'm really hoping someone wants to yell about it with me.
One thing I think about all the time is the sheer scale of propaganda out in the world right now.
Consider for a moment, Henry IV of Castille. He was the brother of Isabella of Castille, who became Queen after his death, and it was because of her that Christopher Columbus set out on his voyage for India. We know SO MUCH about Isabella and Ferdinand and the conquest of the Americas but we know so little about Henry IV. And yes, that's in part because he didn't do as much and wasn't as significant, but it's also because during his rule, his position as monarch was tenuous. He had a lot of detractors and people vying for his throne. These detractors put out huge amounts of propaganda, about him and his daughter, and because there's so much nonsense to wade through to pick out even a sliver of truth, we know barely anything about his reign.
If Historians can be largely clueless as to what happened 500 years ago, in a time where there was no social media or internet, and there were highly limited mediums through which to spread propaganda and misinformation, how screwed does that make us now?
Surely it'll be hundreds of times more difficult to ascertain what happened when there are thousands of contradicting tweets, videos and articles surrounding every issue. It's unspeakably horrible to imagine that 600 years from now, Historians might look back and believe the words of Anti-Vaxxers, or take everything Trump and his supporters say as gospel. I'm not saying they will, because Historians are super smart, and a big part of the discipline is taking sources with a grain of salt, but I think it's a legitimate concern, that we're going to lose the lessons we could've learnt from our present, because it's so bogged down in bullshit.
