His Dark Materials is a franchise that tackles so many branches of physics and even creates a universe where the main course of study is experimental theology which is all about identifying and explaining dark matter while also adding dimensions to string theory, the multiverse theory, and the very concept of the human soul. At the same time, it aggressively calls out the problem with the state being controlled by the church, how people are condemned for being different and religious fearmongering stops the chance at growth both on an individual and a societal scale. It’s a franchise where the heroes of the story are two children who aren’t allowed to know the prophecy they’re a part of, who save the world unwittingly simply by doing what they believe to be right. Meanwhile, the person who thought he was the hero all along, the person who rallied an army from multiple universes to FIGHT. GOD. HIMSELF. is ultimately consumed by his own ego and forced to take a back seat when he realises he’s just one tiny piece of a much larger story that’s true heart is his own daugher. The child he abandoned, the child he didn’t know or care to know how to look after. It’s a franchise about finding love even when your biological family abandon you, it’s about looking evil in the eye and seeing your own mother, it’s about good and evil not being black and white but instead a complex and cruel mixture of both. It’s about the two worst people you know banding together at the last second to save their daughter with their final breaths. It’s about exploration and learning how to grow through experience, it’s about kindness being shared across the multiverse, exchanging stories with strangers and saving the whole world by doing something perfectly ordinary and receiving no reward.
Oh, and it’s also a franchise rich with fantasy, with giant talking polar bears, witches and ghosts, angels and daemons, and a mammal-like species from another world that travels exclusively on roller skates.
And it fucking. rocks.
Yeeessss !!!! I'm super happy you picked up on this detail about Holly's ears 😃 I've always drawn her (and generally elves from AF) with really long ears, I'm especially meticulous about them in my design and fanfics precisely because I absolutely want to bring out more cat-like behavioural features in elves. I really like when fae folks are less anthropomorphised, more animal or even alien-looking. What I love about long ears is how expressive they can be ; droopy when sad, turned back when scared and angry, upright when surprised... Which fits quite nicely with the canon than elves are particularly emotional - I design elves with big eyes and long ears because then everything in their features and behaviours unconsciously underlines how they are feeling. I mean, think Judy Hopps from Zootopia : the animators did such a wonderful job using her ears as an acting tool just as much as her eyes and other facial expressions. She's such a lively and feisty character, who wears her heart literally on top of her head on her sleeve 💜 No wonder a lot of people made the connection with AF ! *realizes she just maniacally wrote some two paragraphs post in two minutes almost unprompted about fairy ears at almost midnight* ... Eheh. Thanks for the reblog and kind words ! Sorry for the digression 😅
😡 Reluctant allies 😡
I just love early series Artemis and Holly foes-to-frenemies dynamic. Even though they hate each other's guts, you can feel that Artemis respects and looks up to Holly ; and that Holly empathises and genuinely wants to understand Artemis. I'm relatively pleased with Artemis' suit ; I absolutely despise drawing suits with every fiber of my being. ... Which is a little bit of an issue when you want to draw Artemis Fowl, as you can imagine.
Don't look at the background though. It's trash 🫠
Oooh, Pareidolia Agent is such a nice title! What is it about?
Wee, it took me some time to find it but I'm really happy with it 😃 It's the sequel to Artemis Experiments Weird 😉 In which you will find, among many other things : - the Fairy Thief heist remastered in France, with Artemis posing as a teenage... girl (because he is my non-binary icon) - a human cult who uses the Wired through singing 🎶 - Root hugging Holly 🥰 - my take on a Banshee 👻 - Tim collaborating with the gang 👀 - Juliet being one of the main characters 💚
🩵 Don’t let your spirit die, this is just a conflict of the mind 🩵
✨ !!! HYPERFIXATIONS COLLIDE !!!✨
I’m weeks late but the minute I heard my absolute beloved Aurora’s latest song ‘Conflict of the Mind’ I knew what I had to do. It’s a song that deeply moves me, I relate to it a lot but it also feels so much like something Artemis or Angeline would feel but never say out loud.
It was my first time drawing with an actual reference image (from the music video which you must absolutely check out if you haven’t seen it already), it was pretty fun and I do like the end result, even though shadows still prove to be my ultimate nemesis.
It’s 4:30AM and I can’t sleep, I’m too mad at the scores at figure skating US nationals, Amber should be in first è.é Anyhoo, here’s my darling Angeline 💜 I’m slowly getting the hang of this procreate thingy
@laeliana asked, and her wish is my command o7 here's a little game : can you find the two Artemis Fowl themed tattoos in this picture ? 👀 (please ignore the 17th century stays I'm working on a costume rn 😅)
I also have a little oak acorn on my elbow, but finding a way to photograph it would have been a pain in my butt, so that's all you're gonna get 💜
Been workshopping Holly’s outfits (I believe she only owns two) (yes she has a tail somehow, don’t ask it was 2 AM when I did this)
Having BPD feels like being stabbed over and over for years until one day, I wake up and I’m not in pain anymore. Not because it’s gone, but because I’ve gone numb. Now it just feels like I’m walking around with my stomach split open, dragging my own intestines behind me.
I’m still bleeding. I just don’t flinch anymore.
Oh dear oh dear. So many things. Here's just a lil snippet : > Artemis still wears suits (sorry fowlblue), but more... vintage ones. I want him to acknowledge that everyone sees him as that "creepy ghost of a Victorian child" and go "oh? alright then" and show up at work looking like a full-on scary baby dandy, most notably ditching the tie for a lavallière (pinned down with a golden Celtic fibula, maybe?) and the loafers for leather laced boots. The vibes? Immaculate. > More acknowledgment that the fairies folklore is Artemis long-standing special interest/hyperfixation since early childhood that even his father's disapproval (bUt mAgiC iSn'T ReAl gRoW uP) couldn't shut down. That child is deeply autistic and it seems like a not too obnoxious and cute way to show it. > MORE 👏 ANGELINE 👏 AND 👏 MENTAL 👏 ILLNESS 👏 > MORE 👏 JULIET 👏 ARTEMIS 👏 FRIENDSHIP 👏 SIBLING-LIKE 👏 RIVALRY 👏 BANTER 👏 TOUGH LOVE 👏 Now for the fairies: > Half-goblin Holly for the win !! Already developed a bit of her backstory in a prev post, but so much fun stuff to alter in the books with that concept. She lives in a goblins neighborhood were only the kids like her, all the adults think she's a traitor and a sell-out. At work she's not as much harassed for being a woman, but almost all the officers hiss-hiss-hiss when they walk past her. Book 2 changes massively, because Holly is absolutely torn by the B'wa Kell rebellion, she feels like she should choose sides but doesn't want to. Artemis can bond with her on being branded as a criminal just because of your birth certificate. I repeat : Artemis can bond with her on being branded as a criminal just because of your birth certificate. > Let the fairies be just as judgmental, racist as they are in the books, but let them be called out on it and damn, just explore it. They call themselves pacifists yet they are are run by an all-powerful police-state. It's actually an amazing idea but it's just... left there. Explore it ! Corruption and immorality isn't just a humans' problem ! > Justice for the goblins. Everyone believes they are the stupidest fairy family? Fine. Maybe they are - but does that mean they deserve to be treated like inferior beings, only worthy of mockery and disrespect ? Nope. Also, according to who's standards are they the stupidest fairy family ? There are so many forms of intelligence. Maybe theirs just don't correspond to the golden standards of the elves and centaurs but nobody bothered to try and understand that. > More fairy and supernatural folklore from various cultures incorporated ! Banshees, selkies, onryo, aswangs, changelings... So many possibilities ! And bonus round, if I were to adapt AF to the screen (in an animated series because I do believe this is the way) : > Make it a mockumentary true-crime show, from the fairies' POV. Featuring interviews from all the main cast, video and sound archives (from the LEP ? from the Fowl family ?), reconstitutions... hell, even actual memories extracted from the Fowl gang after TEC. Not very ethical I know, but again - a true-crime show. > Controversial take, but I would majorly revamp dwarves. No more dwarves, they just are not a fairy species. Mulch would stay more or less the same character in terms of personality, but I would change his species from dwarf to troll - a nordic troll, the ones that change to stone when hit by the sun and change back at night. Make them a mineral species, that are literally made of dirt, rock and moss - how does Mulch because a burglar then ? Well, he's made of dirt and sand. He can sip through walls. He can shapeshift, maybe. That idea is still very much a WIP, but even though I know it's iconic, I don't thing a farting dwarf can actually translate from books to cinema. I don't see how it can't be anything else but extremely cringe. Let's stop there for now, but yeah. I have a lot of more or less unhinged ideas :D
Y’know what? I’m curious, and I wanna talk again-
Fellow AF fans, tell me how you would make Artemis Fowl if you were behind the writing wheel. It can be anything from “Juliet features more heavily in the plot” to reframing the LEP and fairies as a whole. I want to know!
I’ll give you mine- I’d make Artemis more interested in magical creatures than tech alone, and I’d have him wear suits less!
Sooo ask about "Artemis Experiments Weird": is there any chance we'll see more of Selene? :3 her fate saddened me more that that of the other character... sorry for beating around the bush, I don't know how comfortable you'd be with such spoiler straight in the ask. You know what I mean, anyway :3
Thank you for the ask !! Yes if possible I’d rather that this particular spoiler you’re referring to is kept secret ^^ As for Selene, yes you will see a lot more of her ! What the epilogue hints at is that even though Artemis wiped everyone’s memories of everything (including her), he still told her “but I will not forget you”. So Selene has lost her corporeal form, but she keeps on existing as a memory in Artemis’ mind, and can talk with him like an annoying inner voice (fitting for his self-proclaimed conscience ^^). When Pareidolia Agent takes place, it’s been at least a year since they’ve coexisted like this, and they have started experimenting on whether Selene can interact with the world outside of Artemis’ mind… and it turns out she can ! It costs both of them a tremendous mental effort, but Selene still has some access to the Wired, and can remotely access computing systems and simple mechanisms… even, but it’s even more exerting for them both, do some form of “astral projection” and glitch her way out for a few moments, on a very short distance.
Now, will Selene be forever stuck as a ghost, chained to Artemis’ psyche, or will they find a way to truly bring her back - and in the meantime, how does everybody else feels about Artemis seemingly arguing with himself and somehow suddenly manifesting telekinetic powers… We shall see ;) Thank you SO much for this ask @laeliana !!! If you or anyone else has other questions please please please keep them coming :D
