The only rules to writing are the ones you set for yourself, so do it however makes you happy.

I couldn't find a single serious longfic featuring Spinner from MHA, and I'm now 22 chapters into writing my own. People comment on almost every single chapter to chat about a character we don't really get to see representation of otherwise.

Same with Hound Dog. I noticed there wasn't really anything much of substance for him, and just like with Spinner, I blew through everything on AO3 immediately. Is there a huge following? No. But just like the other fic, I have someone I'm chatting with every chapter, and it's great to know there's more content now.

I don't see a ton of romance-heavy fics featuring Dabi. Guess what I'm about to do? Go write another niche fic and talk to a few others who feel the same! Genuinely, my works didn't start out very good, and even though writing is still hard/my work isn't perfect, I've improved so much while contributing to this interest.

And other people interact with me while I do it because someone out there is wanting the same thing you do 💜

the silliest people are the ones who make no content to promote their niche interests but keep complaining about popular characters/ships. you’re lazy and bitter and that’s all there is to it. “no one will interact with it—” someone will. there’s a community out there for everything. take the first step—look at it this way, if someone started posting about this interest of yours, wouldn’t that be great? why don’t you become that person? you are not automatically owed content.

Just so y’all know: I can’t speak for every other fic author but I can say that I remember when people leave me kind comments. I recognize your urls and/or usernames on AO3. I remember you and sometimes in writing my fics I think to myself, “Oh, I hope this person sees this because they liked x in this other fic I did.”

Not only that—I go back and reread comments when I’m feeling low. I look at tags and reblogs and asks and wish I could hold them in my hand like a note from a friend on an old, torn piece of notebook paper.

Your comments have so much more impact than you know. So thanks to those who use the comment section to spread love and encouragement. We appreciate you.

This actually happened to me not too long ago 😭 I just stared at the screen for like 20 minutes. Like, I could not accept what I'd just done. Had to rewrite the whole damn chapter.
