they should invent a way to read in bed that's comfortable
Love that Gavilar spends the entire Stormlight 5 prologue thinking about how much better and closer to divinity he is than everyone he interacts with, but the people he interacts with are, in order (spoilers below the cut):

no offence but i think a lot of us me included don’t actually want romantic love as badly as we think and really are just lonely and crave a closeness and intimacy that feels out of reach in friendships because of society’s emphasis on marriage and the nuclear family so we project that into the never ending search for a perfect love and a soulmate when really we all just want to mean something to someone
i’d imagine they misread this panel in 338! the way it’s spaced, if you’re not quite paying attention you might just read, “i’m erica, zach’s sister” and miss the “and i” on the next line. i did the same thing when i first read it tbh, i had to go back and check again to realize
Small question: How many siblings does Zack have? It's been a while since I last read through the entirety of IWBACAG, but I thought Stella was Zack's only sister and Erica was her friend? But in the more recent chapters, she's Zack's sister? Is this a retcon, or am I misremembering some stuff?
Er... i don't think its mentioned anywhere that Erica is Zack's sister? I think i wrote it so that Erica is Stella's(zack's sister) friend. Stella is Zack's only sibling, and if you can find the error, please point the page out so that i can correct it, thenk q
public libraries in the usa offering free digital library cards to people not in their areas (as of october 2023):
brooklyn (13-21yo us residents)
seattle (13-26yo us residents)
boston (13-26yo us residents)
los angeles (13-18yo california residents)
san diego (12-26yo us residents, not the whole collection just commonly banned books)
these cards (part of the books unbanned initiative) get you access to each library's complete libby/overdrive collection (unless otherwise mentioned), no hoopla/kanopy/physical copies included.
ebook collections are expensive to maintain (many american libraries have annual fees for non-residents because of this) but because of an uptick in book banning (particularly brutal in mississippi last summer) larger libraries have opened their doors more, which is very kind of them!
i've used my seattle card for the last several months and their libby collection has about three times the books that my local library does, which is wonderful for accessing more niche titles or skipping a waiting list. would love to hear of similar ebook initiatives internationally!
i use library extension (firefox/safari/chrome compatible) to check all my collections (+ the internet archive) at once, works for several different countries highly recommend it.
spotify seems to be offering 15hrs/month of audiobook listening to premium subscribers and while that does seem useful if you're already paying and are after a new release with a long library waitlist, libraries are better for everything else.
listened to Bohemian Rhapsody today… i’m so very sorry
Idea:
okay so i just finished Plain Bad Heroines, and i had an idea for a movie adaptation of it that’s incredibly infeasible, but would be the weirdest most layered meta shit ever (spoilers for the book under the cut)
okay so i think the way to go about an adaptation for maximum chaos/confusion would be to adapt Merritt’s novel she writes about the production of the Happenings at Brookhants movie, because now you’re adapting a fake novel made about a parody of a fake movie (bc she changed the names for plausible deniability) which itself was a meta movie about the filming of a cursed movie, all of which is contained within the pages of an actual fiction novel. so now you have a movie about a movie which is actually two separate movies which are going to be stitched together into one movie, none of which is real. then to make it extra confusing and meta, the end credits pan out to reveal all of this movie you just watched was playing in a theater, empty except for three girls sharing a bucket of popcorn. when the lights in the theater come on, you see that they look suspiciously similar to the three main protagonists of the movie you just watched.
If you see this you’re legally obligated to reblog and tag with the book you’re currently reading
honestly lockwood & co would have ended at least 10 times over if the entire main cast weren’t 1) chronic rule breakers, and 2) borderline arsonists
I love Anthony Lockwood because every time his team think they're fucked he's like "or... are we?" as he gets some explosives out of his pockets
i mean the soul permeability explanation makes sense and it’s funny, however i would like to present some other alternatives:
John definitely read, and maybe wrote fanfic prior to the whole god thing, and I wouldn’t put it past him to incorporate fanfic tropes as part of the mythos/scripture around himself
gideons porn mags probably used similar tropes as like setup material for the sexy scenes, and there is a nonzero chance harrow has read some of them
my personal favorite - the noniad is essentially like a several hundred thousand word fanfic imo, and we know from htn that harrow has read enough to quote long sections from memory, so maybe she got her fanfic trope knowledge from ortus
So I like kind of mentioned this in a previous post but like. It’s weird?? Right?? That when Harrow re-constructs the bubble over and over again at the start of HtN Act V she does 1) role-reversal AU 2) Arranged marriage AU 3) Coffee shop AU. Because those are FANFIC TROPES. (The arranged marriage AU being especially unhinged to me because she doesn’t even know John is Gideon’s dad at that point!! Her brain had to come up with “what if Gideon were royalty omg??” ON ITS OWN.) And like the fanfic-ness always was insane bc of course yeah that makes sense from a Doylist perspective, ie, Taz Muir’s an author notable for her inclusion of internet humor and culture, and she has personal experience with fanfic. But it didn’t make sense on a Watsonian level because sure, Harrow’s clearly a Romantic, but this isn’t a genre language that I think Harrow naturally speaks. Harrow doesn’t read smutty romance novels!!! She’s a repressed little nunlet obsessed with bones, her only options of sexual interest in her adolescence being 1) GIDEON 2) a corpse she views as holy and sacred— no really safe options for exploratory crushes or sexual experimentation here. So how is she thinking in fic/romance tropes? Either A) Harrow is significantly less repressed than everything I’ve ever read about her would lead me to understand, B) fic tropes are so transcendental that the agonized, wounded, thrice-haunted mind of Harrowhark Nonagesimus could, in its death throes, find itself in this specific genre of text she has no personal reference for, or C) according to the Sex Pal Theory of Permeability, Harrow has gained an understanding of romance tropes via soul osmosis, from Gideon/Alecto/Wake/Palamedes during the bubble visit???, and that explains why she dreams in fanfiction. I’m going with option C. Thank you Unwanted Guest for solving this little mystery for me 🙏🙏🙏
